A Study on the Relationship between Psychiatric Symptoms and Extraversion-Introversion in Neurotic Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychiatric symptomatology and extraversion-introversion in neurotic disorders.
Eighty three patients visiting the neuropsychiatric clinic and outpatient department completed self-report questionnaires which measured personality(Eysenck Personality Questionnaire) and symptoms of psychiatric illness(Symptom
Checklist-90-Revision),
and a clinicla assessment of each patient was also done by psychiatrist. T scores on the subscales of these two measures of the dighty three subjects provided the basic data for this study.
The correlation between Extraversion and somatizaation was positive but not significant in total neurotic disorder group(N=83). And correlations revealed that Somatization was positively related to Extraversion in generalized anxiety disorder
group
(r=0.51, p<0.05)(N=21) and Extraversion was negatively(but not significantly) related to all symptom dimensions except Somatization in dysthymia group(N=30).
This study demonstrated the significant relationship between extraversion and somatization in the generalized anxiety disorder, and therefore the authors briefly reviewed the relationship between extraversion and hysteria and the somatization
tendency
of psychiatric patients
